I’m a figurative painter, working primarily in oils. In my recent work, I’m letting the subject share the spotlight with the sensuous qualities that I find in the paint itself. I am making up colors as I see fit. I am leaving areas unpainted to allow ambiguity in the work. I am more interested in what’s happening on the surface of the canvas as I am the subject I am portraying. Having spent many years as a plein air artist, where I’d work very hard to render the scene before me, my new approach to painting allows me to be more creative. As a result, I find the work I am doing now to be much more satisfying and exciting to make.
